Why Peer Review for Massage Therapists is Critical

What is peer review?

I recommend that massage therapists should each take some time out to check in with their skill sets and have another licensed and experienced massage therapist give them feedback. This is the foundation of basic peer review. I strongly suggest you invest in this at least once a renewal cycle, and optimally once a year.

As you know there are dozens of considerations that we have to keep track of when giving a massage. Sometimes we lose the basics. We rub our hands together with lotion noisily (really, this is not necessary, please stop doing this). We forget how to drape the sheets and accidentally expose more than we meant to. We lean forward too far and place breasts on the clients head. (This happened to me recently; unacceptable.) But chances are you don’t even know that you’re doing it!

I repeat: Chances are that you’ve picked up a few bad habits that you aren’t even aware of.

To ensure that you keep your skills polished, a basic peer review can help you become aware of the little bad habits before they become BIG bad habits and lose clientele or put your professional reputation at risk.

Are you losing clients and you don’t know why? Have your clients stopped rebooking as easily? Are they avoiding your phone calls?

Chances are it could be a nit-pick that could easily be fixed.

If you live around the Sarasota area, or are willing to travel, Peer Review and Mentoring are two of my holistic business coaching services. If you do not live nearby, contact your local massage school or association and see if they can recommend someone.

For those who really want to take their massage skills to the next level, I also offer an advanced peer review. This is a shorter form of mentoring that will help not only keep you professional and technically proficient, it will help boost the little things that will help you clients feel more comfortable on the table, that will help with the “yum” factor, help them melt into the table, and have them asking for you again and again.

This feedback is fully customized to your own relaxation massage style. Not only do you get feedback about your hands-on skills, I will take the time to SHOW you techniques that will make a world of difference and take it up a notch.

Does this sound interesting to you?

Live locally?

Great! But before we go forward, there are a few VERY important things to know before you call me.

Very important thing #1: I am very busy and only accept therapists for peer review who:

  • Genuinely want to give the best massage they can to each and ever client they see. If you just want to “get through the day” and “be good enough” then please don’t waste my time.
  • Are sincerely looking to improve their skills. If you’re looking for a pat on the head, or to hear how great you are, then consider donating your time to a charity where you can hear that all day long from grateful people who are just happy to be touched and don’t care whether or not you’re a good therapist. Likewise, if you are looking for feedback on marketing or other aspects of improving your practice, business coaching is a much better choice and you should looking at that service instead.
  • Are open-minded and willing to take criticism. I promise I won’t be too harsh, but I will tell you like it is and help you make changes. You can want to give a great massage and want to improve, but when it comes down to it you have to be willing to hear what I have to say.

Did you pass all three points? Awesome!

You see, most therapists don’t really want to be better. They want the magic bullet that will suddenly appear and bring them new clients like magic. They think, “Oh, if I only knew x technique, I could make all the money I deserve!” But that’s not true. If your customer service skills and touch skills suck, it doesn’t matter how many techniques you weave into it. You can spend all you want in marketing and you’ll have a stream of new patients who don’t come back.

There are no shortcuts to greatness as a bodyworker.

Now that you’ve determined if you pass the first level of criteria, here is the next step.

Very important thing #2: I need you to show up on time and DO THE WORK:

  • Are going to show up on time and honor my time. Don’t you just hate it when clients run late? Or forget about you and don’t show up? Whether I come to you, or you come to me (both are options), I only will work with you if you aren’t going to be flakey. Frankly, if you’re flakey, you’re going to have a whole host of business problems and probably won’t benefit from my massage therapy peer review, mentoring, or coaching.
  • Are going to do the work between our appointments to put my feedback into practice. Don’t make me waste my breath. Basic peer review clients come see me one time, and we work out anything major and fine tune a little bit. Advanced peer review massage clients see me twice; once for feedback and practice, and again for a final tune-up. If you choose to work with me, I expect you to actually WORK.

Very important thing #3: I am very busy and have a limited amount of space for this service:

  • Each month I only take on two therapists for peer review and/or mentoring.
  • I only accept 6 therapists a year for business coaching. Right now I only have 2 spots left for 2015.

Still with me?

Fantastic!

Let’s get into the details.

Whether you are a massage therapy student or a licensed massage therapist with fifteen years of experience, I’m happy to work with you. Take a look at the options below and then give me a call at 941-321-5311 to discuss scheduling.

“I had a phenomenally productive coaching session with Lizz Pugh. She integrated practical “to do” ideas with spiritual growth exercises to help me push through my “stuckness” and move forward with my business. A very productive hour!”

Option 1: Free Massage Therapy Business Breakthrough Session

Schedule a half-hour Skype or phone session with me to jump start taking your business to the next level. At the end of the call we’ll discuss peer review vs. mentoring vs. coaching and I’ll invite you into the program that I think makes the most sense based on exactly what you need. There is no obligation, so after our time together if you don’t feel you’ve gotten value out of the call, no problem!

Option 2: Basic Peer Review for Relaxation Massage

This session includes up to 2 hours of my time.

  • We’ll start with a short consultation where you can express anything specific you want feedback on, or would like to practice during our session. This helps me be fully aware of anything special to pay attention to.
  • Next you’ll greet me just like a real customer, and go over whatever paperwork or consultation you do. Just like a real paying client.
  • Then you’ll have 50-60 minutes to give me a massage. You’ll do whatever you do. Work for a spa and 50-minutes is your norm? Then that’s what we’ll do. I’m going to give you feedback based on real-world practice and examples.
  • During the massage if there are any major red-flags (inappropriate body contact, draping issues, knocking into bony prominences) or ways that you could increase the yummy factor immediately (lengthen your strokes, slow down, be more present) I’ll speak up then and there and help you make the correction.
  • After the massage I’ll sit down with you and give you feedback. I’ll also write and make notes as I talk so you can remember and integrate later.
  • For those who do a really great job, I’ll even provide a written testimonial for you to use in your marketing.

Investment:

At my place (located in Lakewood Ranch off of State Road 70) $300

At your place (within 45 minutes of my office) $450. You’ll also receive an additional bonus consultation about your office space, directions you gave me, etc.

“I used Lizz after I graduated and before I even got my license. She helped me become more confident and I landed the first job I interviewed for. The lady I did my interview massage on said I massaged like someone who’d been a therapist for years; not a newbie! I can’t thank Lizz enough for her help.” (Confidential)

Option 3: Advanced Peer Review for Relaxation Massage

This session includes up to 2.5 hours of my time for the first visit and 1.5 hours for the second.

  • We’ll start with a more thorough consultation where you can express anything specific you want feedback on, or would like to practice during our session.
  • I’ll also then have you lie on the table and show you how to tweak your massage to make it even better. I’ll show you tips and tricks I’ve learned over the past 11+ years, as well as little nuances that most therapists don’t know.
  • During our second visit, after you’ve had time to work on at least 10 clients, you’ll demonstrate the changes that you’ve made and I’ll give you a final bit of feedback.
  • For those who do a really great job, I’ll even provide a written testimonial for you to use in your marketing.

At my place (located in Lakewood Ranch off of State Road 70) $450

At your place (within 45 minutes of my office) $550. You’ll also receive an additional bonus consultation about your office space, directions you gave me, etc.

“I’ve been using Lizz for my peer review for the last four years. I met her when she was teaching at the Sarasota School of Massage, and we kept in touch. I finally asked for help and I’m so glad I did. My tips have increased, I rebook more patients than ever, and each time I see her she gives me amazing feedback.” (Confidential)

Option 4: Mentoring Program for New Therapists

In addition to everything that the Advanced Peer Review has to offer, this six week mentoring program for massage therapists will help you not only with your hands-on skills, it also will help you with your business and marketing questions.

  • You’ll receive weekly Skype or phone sessions that will start with a celebration of your accomplishments for the week, accountability for your current goals, and help deciding which actions to take.
  • You’ll receive two in-person Q&A sessions where you can pick my brain, brainstorm with me, and receive support for any challenges you’re facing.

Investment: $1295 (You may apply this to the Pretty Profits Business Transformation Program if you choose to continue!)

The mentoring is really more for those who are exploring their options and are dipping their toes in the water. For therapists who are really serious and ready to make the commitment to themselves and their community I recommend the business coaching instead.

“I was referred to Lizz by a friend who knew I was struggling with “pulling it all together.”  I could quickly see she would be a role model for what I would hope to achieve in my own coaching practice.  Lizz listened, came up with ideas and took notes that she promptly emailed me.  She also included suggestions I could implement immediately.  She is a natural teacher and great communicator.  Thank you Lizz!”

Option 5: Business Coaching for Massage Therapists

Please check out more on this business coaching program for holistic practitioners here.

“Upon hearing about my business model, goals and outline of ideal customers, Lizz was quickly able to assess and point out some potential areas of concern; as well as a whole new arena of future clients. We were able to come up with some solutions to the problems and she was able to come up with the necessary connections I’d need in obtaining the new clientele. I left the meeting uplifted and inspired! It was just the boost I needed. She is a woman with a world of knowledge and I am thankful she took the time and shared some of it with me. Thanks so much for your heart for helping woman in business.”
